Its that time of year again folks! I have decided that this years Halloween costume will be the silent hill nurse! I've always wanted to do this one and I know its been done before but no one I know has ever put together a Silent Hill inspired costume and to be honest there are only a couple of costumes/cosplays online that look good. I'd like to think mine will be better then most on the web ^_^ but yeah I know it will just end up a funky mess, as usual. Either way I plan on having a KILLER time at this years Halloween parties!

The Making of the Silent Hill nurse: The Mask!

So at this point in time I have already pretty much finished up my dress, now it is time to work on the mask. I've never done anything like this before so I've already messed up the first try. I was going to attempt to make some sort of caged support for the head, but they ended up just rough and jagged looking. For my second and so far successful attempt I purchased some Balloons, Cheese cloth and some plaster strips.

I blew up the Balloon and taped it to a bowl for support while I worked to keep the Balloon Stable. Next I wrapped the balloon with cheese cloth and secured it with a rubber band. Using the Plaster roll which is basically just plaster on a cloth like material that you can wet to actvate, I started layering the balloon keeping open spaces around where I figured my mouth and eye would be. I let the strips dry over night and then deflated the balloon, This was the result.

Now the shape of this is way too round but luckily when I tie the excess chescloth together in the back it shapes the mask to more of a face shape that I like.

I still need to add more layers of plaster to build up the Gorey eye sockets and grunge it all up a bit, I will reshape the eyes and mouth and cut away more so I can drink through it. I will also put a dark cloth or something on the inside so my face isn't in direct contact with plaster all night wich I am hoping will also make it more comfortable. It is super lightweight and I'm thrilled about how it is coming out!

Silent Hill Nurse Costume

I looked online for a typical tan shirt dress but nothing was even close to what I wanted to make out for this nurse costume. I went to the halloween stores and the premade nurse outfits were tacky, over priced and looked wretched. So instead of a ready-made I opted for a pattern.

I used a McCalls pattern for a shirt dress. This is only my second time ever using a patter before. The first time ended horribly, even though I had help from some pretty awesome girls. (It was my fault the thing was DOOMED from the start). Right off the bat I started this wrong. I had choosen a pattern that was too small. I'm a pretty big girl, size 13 jeans and I'm usually a size 12 dress. But keep in mind if you are new to using patterns, the sizes do NOT relate! Please measure yourself first before buying a pattern. I know my measurements pretty well now and I knew better before hand but I was in a rush when the fabric store was closing so I just grabbed the pattern and bolted towards the register before the hordes of little old ladies and their mega cupons could tie up the lines. >.< I worked in a jo annes I know the drill!

I'm so Happy I talked myself into getting that dress form, it saves me from my mistakes! Ok. So I'm not the best pattern reader in the world...but I WAS able to cut out the pieces I needed for the dress, I think the creativity centers of my brain want to see if I am capable of figuring things out for myself so I ended up scrapping the patterns instructions and just winged it. LOL I know I know it was a mistake, but that is why we have seam rippers folks!

So far so good for winging it right....RIGHT??? Ok things that are wrong, the shoulders don't fit and the collar is too poufy...I knew knew there were different lengths for shoulders and backs. High Round, Low Round? Say whaaaaa? and I have NO idea how to figure out my back/shoulder dimensions so I guess it and just sewed the whole damn thing together. Its not perfect but at least I can fit my hideous Hulk arms and 'magic hump' in there. And no Magic Hump does not mean bewbies.

Speaking of Bewbies, I noticed my dress form lacks an adequate boulder holder adjuster. o.O Is this a thing? I decided to use a bra on my dress form and then stuffed it to try and make the bodice fit snugger, I think it worked. I'm out of velcro I think Velcro will really help to make the dress fit tighter as well. I really like distressing the fabrics, I soaked the dress in a mixture of hot water, tea bags, and inks. Then I dried the fabric and used a spray bottle with walnut inks to mist the dress as it was bunched up, you can't tell from the photos but there are some really pretty discoloring going on. I'm going to beef that up more when I get the nerve and more walnut ink. I think its shaping up rather nicely!

Making things

So I've been getting really into industrial metal and dance music so I've decided to start making my own outfit considering I can't afford most of the awesome stuff thats out there. So here is the start of the dress. Made from spandex and lyrca. Its super short but I plan on wearing the same color neon green lycra as little boy shorts underneath.

I plan on adding leg warmers that attach to buckels from the bottom of the dress, this will help keep the dress from riding up so much. I'll submit sketches of the final design when I get a chance.
So far so good I think!

So I haven't been online updating things much but that isn't to mean that I haven't been busy. In fact its quite the opposite. I've been running around so much I just don't have time to keep ya'll posted on everything.

The biggest project I'm currently in is starting to do some work for the Baltimore Local ShockWave magazine. I've been going to shows and helping out with interviews and photography.

Well sorry i haven't been around since graduation, but that's to be expected I guess. Just wanted to do a quick update. I graduated mica in may, and the Monday after I started my new job... And now I'm working on my Halloween costume!

So, I decided to go as my character from Fallout 3, So far I have like 85% of my dress made, 96% of my gun finished, and like 10% of my pipboy completed.... I need to get crack'n.

Checks it out

Took a toy gun from the toy store and sprayed it black, then "aged" it with green, brown and silver metalic acrylic paint. I took some putty and covered the logo on one side and to the other added a gauge made from sculpy to look more like the laser pistol. It still needs to be painted to match the rest. I'm considering modifying another gun to look somewhat like the combat shotgun. But we'll see how much time I have after everthings finished.

Next we have the PipBoy 3000:

Started out with this bendable wire mesh stuff called gutter guard. I molded it to fit my forearm. Then with the excess I formed a holder for my cellphone.

Then I duct taped that biotch. Fuck those pre-made clock thingies My shits Legit!

Next comes the Dress from HELL.

Named so after the nightmarish hell making a fucking dress is when you have NO IDEA how to make a fucking dress.

First came the idea to make a temporary sewing dress form from duct tape and an old t-shirt. However it turns out that it was a horrible idea to make one of these things when you're all by yourself!

So for an assignment in Thesis we have to get in contact with a "real" artist that we admire and give them an interview so that we can write a paper. I admit I have been procrastinating with this assignment but its mostly due to sheer terror rather then laziness. After 3 failed attempts at trying to send out my emails, I bailed out last minute everytime from the nerves, I finaly bit my tounge and clicked on the send button at the bottom of the email.

and to my surprise the very next day I recieved an email back from the guy and he was more then willing to answer my questions, I was super excited! I was afraid that he wouldn't answer me back. A few of my class mates claimed they had that problem and they have been emailing their artists since febuary! Reading that email made me fall in love with this guys art even more, because I know the "fame" didn't go to his head and he is a pretty chill guy.

Our Taco Blog was featured in the Baltimore Sun News Paper this morning, and on my way to class I tuned into 98 rock on the radio in my car and what did I hear? Micky and Amelia and Speigal debating about tacos and their favorite mexican dishes!!!!!! They were talking about our friggn blog, holy crap that was awesome. I wanted to call them and tell them but I had no idea the number to the station, and I was driving XD

After spending the year torturing my girlfriends with various taco adventures and trying to stuff their faces full of mexicany goodness, the Baltimore Taco blog is up and ready for your viewing pleasure. Holy crap I just had a critique and it went REALLY well. This NEVER happens people! I think it has been one of my first good critiques in my entire time at MICA...well not really but it has been a while since I had one I could be proud of. I was shocked and my day is going surprisingly well despite my headache!

The class is illustrating the edible. I love it! Its so much fun I recommend taking it if you go to MICA. Two weeks ago we had an alaskan fisherman come in, Gaylord Clark (i think thats his name) and he gave a demonstration on how to scale a fish and shuck an oyster. He was very imformative and as borring as the topic may seem it was actually pretty entertaining. For me at least. And the best part was we got to eat oysters in class! Ok so only 4 of us actually ate them but they were great! If oysters tasted that great the first time i tried them I wouldn't have held off them for so many years, I'm glad I tried them again I was pleasantly surprised.

The assignment was to make instructions on how to either scale a salmon or shuck and oyster. I chose the osyter!

Never in my life have I ever liked fish, to eat I mean. I thought they were gross and smelly and tasted nasty other then stick form smothered in ketchup. That was untill I had a bite of my boyfriend's Sashimi and I fell in love with raw fish. I was just amazing I never had anything like it, Salmon is my favorite its like an orgasm in my mouth! So we tried going to a bunch of places around the Baltimore/Glen Burnie area and my absolute favorite place is located in linthicum call Matsu. That place is fantastic we never had any complaints the food there is fantastic and so fresh and wonderfull I adore that place. The service is by far the greatest place i've evern been to i highly recommend going there.

So I'm in a new class, illustrating the edible. It seems really great so far...even though i have to keep a food diary of sorts and draw what i eat every day XD I hate that part but at least it helps me be more aware of the crap I eat everyday, which is forcing me to go to the gym every weekday night. I've only been in the class for a few weeks now and I'm already more motivated to do more then the necessary work, for my own pleasure. It doesnt surprise me that I'm motivated by food, I love to eat! The class is also making me want to learn to cook food on my own now and so far I came up with this turkey spinah wrap which is to die for. I never had a wrap before in my life other then a burrito and I am now inlove with them! So now I'm gonna just keep posting the food stuffs that im just doodling around with for fun!

So I had my Thanksgiving Break but for me it wasn't so much a break and more of a massive work attack...if that makes any sense. I did get a lot of work done or at least worked on but still I have much more left to do. If worrying about thesis and finals and book deadlines wasn't enough, my car has also decided, again, to stop working XD this time so its harder for me to get to the art supply store and print labs I have to make a day of it.

Only two weeks left and my birthday is next week so at least i have one good thing to look forward to!

So I've been working hard on this book and after getting somewhat bad reviews durring midterm review I decided to scrap what i was doing and start over and work more in digital collage then water color, which i must admit is look much better then what I started out with. My biggest problems I'm facing now is teaching myself InDesign. I know nothing about fonts and type and book layouts so I've been trying to figure it out as I go along, however with the re-do of the cover I'm finding that to be more time consuming then I can really manage. We'll see how it goes, for now I'm just going to post photos of what I'm doing and what I did.

Week three

Its week three back to school and so far things are looking up. I only have classes Mondays and Thursdays, although they are both pretty long days. On Monday I have a documentary film class which is pretty interesting but I have mixed feelings watching some of the films, I mean I understand why my professor chose them specifically but the content still makes me a bit uncomfortable. All I know now is that I can never eat pork, not that I was a fan of it in the first pace but after watching one slaughtered for the sole purpose of photographing and documenting a backwoods home country barbecue, I think I'm a bit turned off by it. I think that I will learn alot from this class and I hope we get to watch more modern films. At 4pm I have my second class, sequential arts. I didn't realize how much goes into making them. Its so much more then just a narrative illustration. There is a lot of designing involved. That seems to be the theme for me this semester nature and design. For my first assignment I had to show something falling to the ground. I was really surprised at how everyone in the class responded to the subject, its interesting to see everybody's different take on it.

As soon as I scan it in I will post my assignment up. It still needs some touching up in PS but that shouldn't take long.

First gig?

Ok so all summer long I've been working at a gym near my house, when I was just chit chatting with a member who tell's me I'll see you later, I stopped him and said probably not because it was my last day working there before classes started up again and I will have to start finding an internship or something. He asked which school I went to and after telling him MICA, an art school in baltimore his eyes practically popped out of his head. He asked if i was an artist, I told him illustrator and that i was still in school for it. and after that he was pretty much speechless until his friend forced him to speak up. "I'm an author looking for and illustrator!" and i said wow im an illustrator looking for an author! I was friendly but skeptical since most people i randomly bump into about art gigs, usually turn out to either want me to do something for free or end up just not being reliable or even really needed work to be done. So i didn't take anything too seriously. That was until he ran back to his car and handed me a few of his business cards and I gave him a post-it note with my shotty yahoo address and later that night he went on to explain how he has been writting a couple of kids novels and needed cover art to be done.

The next day he drops off an artists packett with details of what he's looking for and an unedited version of his first chapter so that I can get a feel of what the book is like.

So im hoping things work out, it isn't my first published book but hopefully it will be my first successful and paid job.
